Youth Sailing - Catamaran

BHCCA Catamaran Introduction Days 2008.

The BHCCA took their cat introduction day on the road for the first time in October last year and it was a resounding success.  Previously all the intro days had been held at the National Sailing Academy in Weymouth.

The catamaran introduction days give youngsters between 11 and 16 the opportunity of sailing a catamaran in teams of two people.  The day is structured with the youngsters having an on shore introduction to the boats.  The children are shown how to perform basic manoeuvres such as tacking, gybing, trapezing, spinnaker hoists and capsize drill.  The sailors then get on to the water and are followed closely by the coach boat who gives on the water instruction to each team.

After a couple of hours, the sailors return to the club for a quick lunch break.  The afternoon session will see the children rotated on other boats and they all get to try trapezing.  The afternoon session ends with a few races and then it is back to the shore late in the afternoon for the all important debriefing.

The BHCCA supply the coach free of charge. We also deliver and help rig the 6 boats and supply the trapeze harnesses.

The hosting club supply a rib for the coach, a room suitable for briefing & de-briefing and the usual club facilities of catering and changing rooms with hot showers.  Most importantly the club promote the event in their area.  This often involves contacting other local clubs and schools.

A nominal fee of £15 is paid by the sailors for a very active day’s sailing.
